To enhance the impression of the Büdesheim roundabout, Ottmar Hörl developed a large-scale sculpture in the shape of a lion, inspired by the heraldic animal of the city of Braunschweig (Brunswick).
In 2017, conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl implemented PLAYGROUND, a temporary art project in the nearby green grounds of LÖWEN ENTERTAINMENT GmbH. The installation included three hundred serial lion sculptures cast from golden plastic material. When the presentation came to a close, the installation was disbanded and the remaining figures went to the office and production rooms of the head office as well as the company's branches.
To tie in with the former project, Ottmar Hörl agreed to develop a large-scale sculpture for the Büdesheim roundabout. He created a lion sculpture that makes reference to the logo and history of the company. The shape of the lion has been inspired by the heraldic animal of the city of Braunschweig as this is where LÖWEN was founded in 1949. The company, whose headquarters has since moved to Bingen, was named after the Braunschweig lion. The figure's colour, traffic red, connects the company with public space where the lion sculpture promotes identification for viewers, and acts as an invitation to all citizens, residents and passers-by to take a fresh look at the city or quarter where they live. They are also invited to explore the question of why there is a Braunschweig lion in Büdesheim. Rather than creating monuments in the classical sense, Hörl offers lasting occasions for communication. Due to its relative neutrality of shape, the sculpture becomes a screen on which people can project their own interpretations. "It's not that I prescribe any particular tendency as a way of thinking. You may approach the sculpture without Hörl getting in the way." (Ottmar Hörl)
