"Pallaksch, Pallaksch!" - Hölderlin installation, Tübingen, 2020

From 15 to 25 October, a new sculptural installation is on view in Tübingen. "Pallaksch, Pallaksch!" presents a multitude of monochrome Hölderlin figures in different colours on the steps of the Collegiate Church and on the Neckar Wall. After all, Tübingen marks the 250th anniversary of the poet and thinker this year.

Not only Beethoven’s 250th anniversary is celebrated this year; one of the most important German poets is also given this honour. Poems such as "An die Parzen" [To the Fates] and "Hälfte des Lebens" [The Middle of Life] sprang from his pen – Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) that is, of course.

In his latest sculptural installation in Tübingen, Ottmar Hörl invites you to engage in a close encounter with the poet who created "Hyperion".

To this end, he assembles a multitude of Hölderlin figures, each of them hugging a book to their chests, in front of two formative places in Hölderlin's life: in front of the Tübingen Collegiate Church and in front of the Hölderlin Tower, the last and longest place of residence in the poet's life.

What they offer the viewer is access to Hölderlin in a straightforward way that is not necessarily evident in the poet’s oeuvre. Instead of a hermetic, classic monument on a high pedestal, the seated figures are light, colourful, and – if you wish – at eye level.

In this way, Hörl aims at building a bridge and encouraging onlookers to discover the writer; he also challenges the traditional view of Hölderlin, and addresses the observer's own thoughts and feelings.

And all of a sudden, you remember Hölderlin's call: "Come! into the open, Friend!"

There's nothing we'd rather do.
